Summer themed holidays - 8 -
Ornithological Holiday

Itinerary (1)

Day 1 :
Fly from Paris to Longyearbyen.

Days 2 to 8 :
We leave Longyearbyen for a one-week voyage Isfjord (the bay of ice), navigating from bay to creek.

The first stage is at Tempelfjord, a magnificent cathedral of stone where an imposing colony of Fulmar petrels nest. We spend the night on board the boat.

The trip is governed by land-based trips with a guide who will take you to the best observation places for the bird colonies (without disturbing them).
Billefjord: depending on the condition of the ice, we’ll go right to the Nordenskiold glacier, a real cascade of ice falling into the sea. Seals coma and lounge at the foot of the glacier. There is the possibility of visiting Pyramiden; this former Soviet mine, abandoned in 1998, is only a few kilometres away. Then there’s a stopover at Svea glacier, where bears frequently roam in search of seals.

This holiday allows you to see birds at sea as well as on land.
We may see the following :
Barnacle goose, pink-footed goose, common eider, long-tailed duck, ptarmigan, ringed plover, purple sandpiper, great skua, Arctic skua, ivory gull, glaucous gull, kittiwake, Brunnich’s guillemot, black guillemot, Atlantic puffin, snow bunting.
As well as: Ringed seal, bearded seal (with lots of luck), beluga (with lots of luck), Polar bear (with lots of luck), reindeer and Arctic fox.

Days 9 to 10 :
We return to Longyearbyen and watch the colonies in the area, which is very rich in terms of birds (including one of the most beautiful little auk colonies of Spitzbergen).
Birds generally seen here are :
Common eider, king eider, long-tailed duck, ptarmigan, grey phalarope, purple sandpiper, Arctic skua, ivory gull, glaucous gull, little auk, snow bunting. We also see reindeer and Arctic foxes
.
